Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
