Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
