EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
