Disappointing The Software Giant's Results Knock More Than $70bn From Worth, Fueling AI Bubble Fears.

The tech firm's disappointing latest earnings have erased over $seventy billion dollars from the market capitalization of the enterprise software giant established by Trump ally Larry Ellison, heightening growing apprehensions of a hype cycle in AI-related stocks.

Steep Share Price Decline Comes After Sales Shortfall

Stock in the firm tumbled by 11.5% overnight after it posted a disappointing 14% growth in sales to $16bn in the previous quarter, while simultaneously disclosed plans to ramp up its AI spending by about $15 billion.

The business recorded weaker-than-expected quarterly revenues for the quarter ending in November, with sales at its key cloud services business growing at a more modest rate than forecast, at thirty-four percent.

Investor Jitters Over Spending and Debt

Markets were also disappointed by a more moderate 68% increase in income from its infrastructure business.

Concurrently, the market were spooked by the company's increased projections for AI investment. It now expects capex to surge by 40% to $50bn, with the lion's share of the additional spending allocated for expanding server farms.

This heavy spending plan comes amid a growing debt pile, with Oracle's long-term debt having increased by twenty-five percent over the past year to reach $99.9 billion.

"Honestly, the earnings release was not dramatically bad, but it served to validate fears around substantial AI spending, funded through debt, with an unknown timeline for profitability," noted a market analyst.

Broader Market Repercussions and Ecosystem Concerns

Sustained optimism about the capabilities of AI technology has led to a sharp rise in stock prices in the past year, but there has been a rising number of warnings from policymakers and business leaders who warn equity prices could tumble if investors become let down by the progress or adoption of AI technology.

While Oracle has become an important technology provider developing enterprise solutions for major corporations worldwide and has in recent years found strength in the cloud sector, there are growing questions about how dependent tech giants are growing on each other’s financing within the AI ecosystem.

Oracle said that its metric of contractual revenue rose by 440% over the last twelve months. However, analysts were skeptical when it was revealed that these commitments were driven by new commitments from other tech giants like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are high-quality customers, it will not allay fears that the tech sector's AI investments are becoming circular, which makes the sector susceptible to a loss of investor confidence," observed a research director.

"Overall, robust backlog increase was not enough to alleviate anxiety about AI and the massive amount of investment spending required by companies to develop AI infrastructure."

Ripple Effect in AI-Related Shares

Other AI and tech-related stocks also slid in extended trading following the Oracle announcement. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Stock fell by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock dropped by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the investment firm's shares tumbled by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
