Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon report has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in question contained particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the inspector general to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
